ENTRY GUIDELINES
These guidelines will apply to all entries. Please note that entries will not be returned.
ENTRY FEES: A $5.00 per entry fee will be calculated and charged at the event.
ENTRY FORM: Please download and complete an entry form for each contest entry here
Bring completed form with you to the conference. For Mail-In entries, include this form when entry is mailed.
FORMAT: Entries must be submitted either as a QuickTime data file OR on Mini-DV tape. No more than one entry may be on any one tape or QuickTime file/disc.
- QuickTime: Entries may be exported as a QuickTime Movie file (".mov") and burned to a DVD-disc. Please do not submit entries in DVD-Video format. Entries received in DVD-Video format may not be screened.
- Mini-DV Tape: Entries submitted on Mini-DV tape should start at the beginning of the tape, have 15 seconds of slug before the content begins, and have a minimum of 15 seconds of slug after the end of the content. Please include the DV Timecode for the beginning and end of the entry on the entry form.
LABELING: All entries must be labeled as follows:
- Contest
- Entry Name/"Title"
- Instructor Name
- School
- *PLEASE: No graphics or "fancy" type.
- If using a printer, please use "Arial" or similar simple font.
- If hand-writing, please print clearly.
"DEAD ON ARRIVAL" ENTRIES: Please check all entries before submission. Entries that cannot be played will be considered "DOA" and will not be judged.
DISQUALIFICATION: In general, judging will avoid disqualifying entries. However, students and instructors should be aware that the following could result in disqualification
- DOA: (See above.)
- Labeling: Unlabeled entries will not be judged.
- Contest Criteria: Entries must meet all the criteria of the entered contest (i.e. themes, formats, category, etc.)
- Time Limit: Time limits must be strictly observed. A "margin of error" may be given, but considerable time overruns may result in disqualification.
- Content: Students are reminded to create content that is appropriate for screening in front of an audience of students and teachers. Gratuitous use of profanity, violence, sexual content, etc. will result in disqualification.
CONTEST RULES
MAIL-IN CONTESTS
DEADLINE: All mail-in entries must be postmarked by October 23, 2009
Schools may only submit ONE entry per category. All entries must have been produced between March 15 and October 23rd 2009, and must be produced by current students, and NOT by recent graduates.
- NEWS STORY: Coverage of a breaking event, or an event as it happens. Time Limit: 2 minutes
- FEATURE STORY SHORT FORM: A story about a person, issue, or other appropriate topic that is not necessarily tied to a news event. Time Limit: 2 minutes
- FEATURE STORY LONG FORM: A story about a person, issue, or other appropriate topic that is not necessarily tied to a news event. Time Limit: 2-4 minutes
- HUMOROUS SEGMENT: A story or produced piece that goes for laughter. This can be from a regular newscast, or an entertainment Time Limit: 2-4 Minutes
DROP-OFF CONTESTS
The 72-Hour Challenge
Clock Start: 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 3rd
Deadline: 9:00 a.m. Saturday, November 6th
SCHOOLS MAY ENTER AS MANY TEAMS AS THEY WANT IN THE DROP OFF CONFERENCE CONTESTS, BUT STUDENTS MAY ONLY BE ON ONE TEAM
"MOVIE MAKER MUSIC VIDEO CHALLENGE"
When the 72-Hour clock starts, all "Movie Maker" teams will receive scripts and directions. The contest will call for a finished product that runs no longer than the time limit below. Opening titles and closing credits count against that time limit.(Actors can be anyone the team wants to use) NOTE: No copyrighted material may be used. All music and visuals must be original, and recorded during the contest. No file footage of any kind. Time Limit: 6 minutes
JUDGES will look for: Movies that tell a strong story, with appropriate pacing, cinematography, lighting, sound, dialogue, editing, and a definite beginning/middle/end.
"MUSIC VIDEO CHALLENGE"
When the 72-Hour clock starts, teams will receive a link to a collection of music tracks and lyrics from the DU Uncut Music Catalogue. Teams must choose one song for which they will make a music video. They will drop off their finished music video by the 72-Hour deadline listed above. Time Limit: Song length
JUDGES will look for videos that utilize storytelling techniques, strong editing and visuals, compelling angles or approaches, and videos that fit the music they are illustrating or interpreting.
"BROADCAST JOURNALISM CHALLENGE"
When the 72-Hour clock starts, teams will receive an e-mail containing their "prompt" or "theme," and any other specifications the coordinators choose to include. Shows and/or stories must be journalistic in nature, and all footage must be shot and edited during the 73 hours of the event. NO file footage, NO copyrighted material of any kind, is allowed. Time Limit: 10 minutes
JUDGES will look for entries that concentrate on strong storytelling while sticking to the theme and/or directives provided in the contest packet. The quality of the video, audio, editing, reporting, plus the overall impact of the entry will help judges determine the winners. Schools are reminded to avoid "inside" stories about staff members or anyone connected with your broadcast program. The staff should not have previously covered the topics and characters covered for this production.
STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE PRE-CONVENTION CONTESTS MAY ALSO ENTER AN ON-SITE CONTEST. GOOD LUCK!
ON SITE CONTESTS
ALL EDITING WILL TAKE PLACE IN ASSIGNED AREAS ON THE DRURY CAMPUS. YOU MAY NOT EDIT OUTSIDE OF YOUR ASSIGNED AREA, AND TEACHERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE EDITING AREAS.
***All On-Site Contests begin with a meeting in the Shewmaker Lobby***
ON-SITE ENTRY LIMITATIONS
- School Limit: Schools may enter as many teams and individuals as they wish.
- Students: Students may enter a maximum of TWO (2) on-site contests, not including Midnight Madness.
EXCEPTION: Only one team per school in Spot Feature, no more than two teams per school in Midnight Madness.
"MIDNIGHT MADNESS"
Schools can enter one or two teams in this fast-paced production challenge. Teachers may assist their students and be part of the team.
Contest instructions will be given out Friday, November 5, at 7 p.m. in the lobby of the Shewmaker Communication Center at Drury. All participants are welcome, but only two representatives, a teacher and a student, are required. Expect to shoot, edit, add music, graphics, effects, anything you want as you create a 75-second project. What kind? Sorry, you have to be at the meeting to find out.
Deadline is MIDNIGHT....duh...so night owls should be right at home in this contest.
(HINT: Not journalism based; Midnight Madness will not count against student entry limits.)
Editing: Students will receive a DVD with QuickTime files of raw footage and sound. They will have two hours to edit a short film from the provided footage. No voiceovers, music, or outside footage will be allowed.
(Time Limit: 1:30 – 2:00 minutes. Entries over 2:00 minutes will not be judged.)
Spot Feature: Teams will receive an assignment and have four hours to file their story.
(Time Limit: 1:30- to 2:00 Entries over 2:00 minutes will not be judged.)
Anchoring: Each student will have five minutes to review a script on teleprompter. They will then be taped reading that script on-camera.
Commercial: Teams will receive a product and have four hours to produce a 30-second commercial for that product.
(Time Limit: 30 seconds. Entries over or under 30:00 seconds will not be judged.)
Newswriting: Each student will receive wire copy and have 60 minutes to write a one-minute news script.
Live Shot: The contest will involve students receiving a list of facts about a spot news story they are covering "live." They will have a few minutes to organize their thoughts, and then do a live report, which will involve a toss back to the anchor. The anchor will then ask the reporter a follow-up question. Judges will look for accurate, professional delivery of information, and the ability to think on your feet.
